3rd Place: Volkswagen Phaeton V8 ($74,365).

BMW 745

"..As the astronauts in "2001: A Space Odyssey" might've said, "Darn nice ship we've got here--if only we could jettison that infuriating HAL 9000." And so it is with this BMW. One editor wrote: "A nicely engineered powertrain and chassis spoiled by a 'more is more' misapplication of technology."

Jag Vanden Plas

"....In other respects, though, the light weight was a drawback. In the Jag, you're aware of more road and wind noise than in the big, isolated Germans (or in the Lexus, for that matter). Several editors also commented that the structure didn't feel as buttoned-down as the heavyweights'. "The driver's outside mirror vibrates so much it's almost useless," noted one logbook entry. "Not as rigid and dense as the others," wrote another. "There's a bit of wobble in the steering column," wrote a third...."

"...The Jag also felt a bit light on creature comforts, ...."

"...As speeds rise, however, the Jaguar feels less happy than its German rivals. "The least pleasant to drive above 100 mph," wrote one editor. "Tends to wander in its lane a bit and feels the least stable of the group." Wrote another: "Terribly soft and willowy, especially after the Audi."..."

Mercedes-Benz S430

"....Still, the S430 is a solid, capable, status-filled luxury cruiser. Summed up one editor succinctly: "It's not hard to understand why an awful lot of drivers want to be at the wheel of this Mercedes."

Volkswagen Phaeton V8

"...Years ago, who would've guessed that one day a luxury-sedan ranking would rise from BMW and Jaguar to Mercedes-Benz and then, uh, Volkswagen? Yet here we are, with a long and sleek new VW shouldering its way into this ritzy price class--and not a bud vase or Grateful Dead paint job in sight..."

"...Darned if this big VeeDub doesn't carry her weight awfully well," wrote one editor. "While others were complaining over the walkie-talkies about crosswinds, the Phaeton was tracking straight and true."

""Excellent one-button interface for adjusting everything from the climate-control fan to the shock settings," noted another. "And the gauges all look like Swiss watch faces!" "

"Only when pushed to its limits on our tight, twisty handling loop did the Phaeton stumble a bit...Steering feels disconnected near the limit. The car is slow to react to changes of direction."

"Those criticisms are fairly minor--on our handling loop, we were driving the Phaeton far harder than most owners ever will"

"..For now, the VW badge on the hood may not say "premium" to many auto shoppers, but one drive in the Phaeton will be enough to convince them that it should..."

Lexus LS 430

"Some cars (and we don't need to name names) intimidate with their technology, seeming to say, "I'm powerful. I'm complicated. If you want to master me, you'll have to work for it." Then there's this Lexus. "Come on in," it seems to say. "We've taken care of everything. Just fire me up and enjoy a remarkable ride." aptly summed up...

"Unlike the Jag and the German entries, which clearly carry a healthy dose of sport in their DNA, the Lexus would rather stroll through the twisties, thank you very much. Not only does the handling feel greasy when pushed, this car won't even let you drive it to the limit..."

"No funny business. An extremely appealing luxury sedan for the vast majority of drivers."

Audi A8 L

"...Very quickly, our thesaurus ran out of synonyms for "splendiferous!" From exterior styling to handling, fit and finish, comfort, and technology, the A8 L earned top marks in our voting. In the overall scoring, it wasn't even close: The big Audi was way ahead of an otherwise tightly packed field..."

"Man, you can really stretch your legs in that back seat," wrote one editor. "It almost feels like a freakin' Maybach back there."

"Handling proved exceptional--especially for such a big car."

"Unbelievably athletic in spite of its considerable length," wrote one editor. "Claws through curves with poise and confidence, and the traction control seems perfect--you can hear it making small adjustments to the power as the car slides." Noted another editor: "I expected nothing but gross understeer, but this thing is so beautifully balanced I could actually drift it through fast sweepers.

"Summed up one editor: "The best combination of confidence-inspiring performance, modern design, and sophisticated luxury in this class. A thoroughly fabulous piece."

"To think that a high-performance S8 version is on the horizon gives us goosebumps."
