: faint :

Ok, here we go:

well, picked it up a couple of weeks ago from a friend, who bought it from an elderly lady. One female owner , stored since 1991, still registered until the beginning of the year, regularily driven, can't be wrong ?

33er17.jpg

50 GLS wagons left on german streets according to the KBA (german DVLA) makes it pretty rare, so I had to take it. My first car was a Passat Variant, and I always wanted one since then.

33dez10.jpg

So yesterday I looked closer... I knew, that the rear wheel arches, the rear quarter panels, and the sills had to be made, now look what else I found :o

33dez1.jpg

left wheel arch...

33dez21.jpg

when I removed the mud flap, I held half of the arch in my hands

33dez12.jpg

Then I got a little bit scared, this is the rear axle mount under the rear seats...

One of the front subframe mounts...

33dez22.jpg

the right rear inner wing.... so the fuel tank has to be removed....

33dez23.jpg

The spring seat on the rear.... the bump stop fell off, as there is no metal left :o

33dezz13.jpg

this is the left inner wing... unbelievable amount of corroded metal.... first I was shocked, but this seems to be not so complicated to weld...

33dezz15.jpg

This will be tricky; the rear axle mount.... already welded before, but as there are 4 layers of metal , not easy to repair... usual the nail in the coffin for these cars....

33dezz4.jpg

well, the interior is in fantastic condition; despite of the dashboard, but all the door cards, the headliner and all the blue velours seats are fantastic...

33dezz18.jpg

finished for this weekend ; next weekend i'll take out engine/gearbox and axles.... and of course the front wings, i'll keep the best for the end

normally I should just weigh it in an pretend that I have never had it and even have never heard of a Passat, i'll decide what to do with it next week. Though after seeing here some really impressive projects (for example the twin engined Escort) motivates me to go on....it is just metal, can't be so hard ?

a small update ; I love Sunday, sleep til 8, go out with the dog and after breakfast disappear into the workshop until lunch...

33dezy5.jpg

Took off the wings today, looks not nice, but I expected it to look like that....

33dezy2.jpg

The welding here is impressive... they tried to weld the a-pillar, they welded this piece of metal to the wing and not to the pillar...

33dezy8.jpg

then out with the engine... I took out engine/gearbox/front suspension out completely; less work and I can put all the stuff into one corner....

33dezy9.jpg

Thought about restoring the cart then... less rust

33dezy13.jpg

this is the rear axle mount to be seen from the sill... the quality welding made a removal of the patches on the sill without tools possible.... now, this will be the hardest challenge...

next week I am taking out the rear axle and the fuel tank....

small update today, tomorrow more. I started welding today ... no, not on the car, I fabricated some brackets to keep the car mobile :

33dex5.jpg

then I removed the front carpet and found this :

33dex6.jpg

I am probably the first man to weld a gear lever ? :P

33dex7.jpg

a-pillar right side, as expected...

33dex8.jpg

same on the left side, worse, but still as expected....

but I am quite happy, looked again at the rear axle mounts, and it looks like it is not so tricky as I expected.... some more pics tomorrow....

some more pics from yesterday (when the wife was cleaning the house, I didn't want to stand in the way, so I went downstairs... : smil :

33dexy1.jpg

Spare wheel department, some small holes ;)

33dexy3.jpg

Taking pics with the flash makes it look more scary....

33dexy4.jpg

this is where the fuel tank was, looks quite good. Also the fuel tank is in mint condition, as it is made of plastic. First production car with a plastic fuel tank, and this back in 1974... why didn't they do the first galvanised production car ;D And of course, the metal straps, which keep the tank in position turned to dust, when I touched them...

33dexy8.jpg

here was the bump stop fitted.... designed to corrode, as all the dirt gets in the hole on top of the bump stop and can't get out... designed to rust...

of course, it looks that I am totally crazy to build up this car, but I thought about it long, and I think, it will be worth it in the end. You can buy "better" examples for sure, but no-one knows, how they look, when you strip them. As most of the rust issues are caused by the design of the shell and the lack of any wax, even on a well waxoiled car rust will find his way....

Hopefully I can design a bracket for the rear, so it can leave the lift before christmas... then i'll be ripping out the sills and start with the hardest part. between christmas and new year I have some days free, where the Type 25 gets a new wheel arch and some fresh paint....

Når man begynner på noe slikt så er man vel litt over gjennomsnittet glad i rust...: dum :

not much done over christmas, I have found some metal bars in the house , so I can reinforce the body during welding. I don't want the wagon to fold together, when I remove the sills (or what is left of them ):

33jan3.jpg

and then I found a budget way to repair the arches :

33jan1.jpg

ok, these are the arches destinated for the Jetta, but I just wanted to shock the purists.... :D Now waiting for the first panels to arrive, and then we go on....

Collecting panels at the moment; most of them will arrive in two weeks with the polarexpress Polardego, who comes over for a visit :P also got an e-mail from a classic car magazine, which is interested in "hopeless" projects :o

I already have a brand new front wing, a rear quarter panel, a rear inner wing and a trunk lid... also some of the panels necessary for the front and a good second hand bonnet; and I have found a spot welder in the company, so hopefully soon there will be a grinding and welding event.... i'll post a pic from the brand new rear axle mount tonight....

time is a bit short at the moment, as someone drove over our cat and nearly killed it... so I am a cat nurse at the moment....

so here we are :

achs.jpg

brand new piece of metal..... : smil :

my mate (the bodyshop owner) came over a couple of days ago, looked at the Passat for 3 seconds and said "Don't do it, don't restore this car"... as I always listen to experienced people I came to the conclusion, that ...

I don't care ;D ;D ;D

33erjan1.jpg

Just to start doing anything, I took the drill and the grinder out and removed some metal... bought a very good wire brush, and we have rust free metal (at last).... so this is a bit more complicated, I have to weld the inside before, shaping some panels, as this is one of the four subframe mounts...

33erjan2.jpg

nasty piece of a-pillar, I removed the tacky weldings from the previous owner;

33erjan3.jpg

and stopped here with this art-shot... the missus had some other jobs for me in the house ::) soon to follow : the Passat will receive some attention from our norwegian friend :o

time for an update here; when Polardego visited me, he brought a lot of panels (some from Norway, some where picked up in northern Germany); Big Thanks to Mr.H :venner:

hakon102.jpg

a brand new boot lid for 60 Euros !

hakon108.jpg

and a brand new rear quarter panel we picked up in bavaria :

hakon109.jpg

I also have some more panels now I desperatly need; so I can start. So I have to start, I felt that now is the time to start welding, otherwise I might lose interest and that would be a shame :)

33dez9.jpg

so I started here, shonky welding of one of the front subframe mounts ....

33erjan1.jpg

cut out a bit of metal, the old welding was easy to remove with a hammer...
