Før jeg fortsetter med prosjektet til Jürgen, så legger jeg ut litt om hvilke andre biler han har...

Hello everybody.... Hakon forced ahem invited me to have a look at the best norwegian website : smil :

some of you might recognise my location, as this is Hakons headquarter in germany, a couple of my rides here :

33er17.jpg

This is a 1978 Passat Variant, called "Pandora" after the famous, never to-open Pandoras box. Indeed it turned out to be a can of worms, i'll post some inbetween pics later, this is the worst car ever to be restored, and no.one who is mentially sane, would have started on this car. I did :)

mv5.jpg

This is "Paula", i have it for a couple of years, a 1988 wbx Type 25.... the best car i have ever had so far, loads of fun, currently off the road, waiting for spring.... it's got new paint last year, since then it is not used in winter anymore...

t3mai2.jpg

Then we have a 1971 VW 1600 TL, no name yet, project is on hold at the moment, as the Passat needs all the welding attention at the moment, this is more a long term project. I have a vision of an early 90s, yellow painted cal-look style... let's see, what happens....

varineu7.jpg

this is the latest addition to the fleet; a 1987 Passat Variant, this will be our car for our holidays in norway... an important feature for the hot summer nights in norway : the air-condition : smil :

aki3.jpg

another 1987 Passat, special edition called "Trophy"... i got the car for free, it had a broken auto box, other than that it is in fantastic condition and has no rust...

topic01.jpg

ok, another Passat; a 1984 special edition called "Topic", in not so bad condition, i have this car since 2002 and it is a keeper. Since then its in storage, gonna dig it out sometime in the future....

jetta2a22.jpg

ok, another VW, it's a rust free Jetta Mk.I, it as for free, came without engine and is currently on hold, too. I have a Scirocco fuel injected engine (95BHP) including power steering and 5speed box waiting to go in.... it also has no interior, but that is not really necessary. A seat and a steering wheel will do for the beginning :)

audinass2.jpg

last but not least, my second ever car, in the family since 1981, and they will have to put it in my grave one day....

megcc4.jpg

i forgot the daily driver, a 2008 Megane CC, "hairdressers car", it is new, it has warranty, i don't have to repair it....

Crazy day yesterday; actually this was 5 kms away from the company, the guy

lived in the next town to Burgstetten.... it was reallly crazy, he shot at

everyone which was in the way, the last two persons were a salesman and a

customer from a VW dealer... the town was totally blocked yesterday, there

were 1000 policemen there..... it's just so unreal, when this happens in

America (it also happended there yesterday!) you just shake your head.... in

the end 16 persons left their home yesterday morning and didn't come back in

the evening....

Er bare så meningsløst dette...

Da er det på tide å oppdatere litt fra Tyskland igjen...

not much happened this weekend, but I picked up another part of the puzzle :

dash1.jpg

a well used dashboard for the passat; not perfect, but useable...

dash2.jpg

some small cracks, we'll see what to do. Don't want to spend 400 € for a brand new one (still available), so this is more than fine....

a lot of people doubt my sanity : smil : I am still enjoying it, so it can't be wrong ....

didn't do much this weekend (it was wifes weekend, repaired her car and the kitchen :P ) but this afternoon I escaped into the workshop and separated the engine from the gear box :

moto1.jpg

unfortunately no pics of how I did, don't want to get in trouble with health&safety :o

moto2.jpg

this is the rest, I am keeping the gear box and the subframe, everything else ill go into the bin....

moto3.jpg

the struts are dead, i'll replace them with some from the MkII Passat , combined with H&R Springs and the bigger calipers and vented discs.... not sure about the engine; with 85 BHP it should be more than ok ; I could just replace the gaskets and give it a good clean, still considering of taking off the head.....

also found some more parts; a set of brand new ( and already cutted) rear springs, a set of rear adjustable shocks and the missing inner arch for the left quarterpanel....

and another update, progress was very slow, 4 weekends without time, caused by work in the company and holiday.... one impression from the holiday in the land of trabants and Wartburgs :

bbg3.jpg

Trabant from the local chocolate factory, despite from this it was a boring non-car related holiday.....

back to work; the spare wheel department :

bbg9.jpg

my initial plan was to cut out the spare wheel panel and use the part from the Jetta I have here.... I took a closer look and decided to patch it up, less work....

bbg10.jpg

then I realised that today is not a day for welding.... and started to dismantle the engine. I had to put it onto the engine stand....

bbg11.jpg

this was a job I really enjoyed today, no panel beating, welding etc. just simple work....

bbg12.jpg

took of the head, no surprise here, the engine is the thing I worry the least at the moment, as they are absolute bullet proof....

bbg13.jpg

I gave it a good clean and tomorrow i'll put some paint on it.... no modifications planned for the engine, as with 85 BHP it is quite quick (850 kgs) , I only want to replace the seals and update the cylinder head.... more pics tomorrow, probably I will be in the mood for a welding session : smil :

mog1.jpg

found some Hamerite in the workshop (satin black) and that's fine. Looks easy, but took a while to clean all the oil and dirt away....

mog2.jpg

Result, now it's time to find a gasket set on the bay..... next weekend it's welding time again... and also on friday we have a bank holiday ;)

today we have a bank holiday over here, day of the german reunion, so I can use this day to do something useful :

33oct1.jpg

welded up the spare wheel department, could look better, but for me it is ok...

33oct2.jpg

the rust was cut out, so that's ok...

33oct5.jpg

some primer...

33oct6.jpg

finished....

then yesterday two parcels arrived :

33oct3.jpg

this parcel was for free, a mate from the german passat forum was given this by a previous passat owner in the town next to me (he actually was from Leipzig, a couple of 100kms away) and he sent the parcel to me.... some parts I need (taillights), other parts go into the shelf if I need them to swap for other parts...

33oct4.jpg

second parcel containes a set of brand new rear springs (with an additional coil ;D ) and a set of NOS "Armstrong" rear adjustable shock absorbers. Made in England. Cool.... the thing was 30 € , so I can't really complain and call it a bargain. Sourcing the parts is almost as much fun as working on the car ....

stay tuned, as I have another 2,5 days to work on the car... should I continue on the engine or move over to the left quarter panel ?.....

ok, I moved on to the left quarter panel... took out the grinder :

33octo1.jpg

drilled the spots :

33octo2.jpg

depsite of the huge hole it's actually better than the right side ...

33octo3.jpg

and now I know, how the inner sill looks, there wasn't anything left on the other side 8-)

33octo4.jpg

and here we go.... took an hour and it was gone...

33octo5.jpg

trial fitting of the inner arch, perfect....

33octo6.jpg

ah, I know I am not in a hurry to select the colour, but I have an idea.... the car was silver, not an option, so I thought white would be nice, then I found this :

Heck1.JPG

this is miami-blue, a colour from the early Mk.I Golfs, it was available for the Passat , too and it was available with a blue interior.... should I go for this then ?

this morning I was busy again :

33oct5.jpg

The rusty bit was the next thing to do. There was the tank for the rear windscreenwasher, this was obviously leaking a little bit and so the rust could start. Though the metal was solid , I decided to replace it....

33octob1.jpg

cutting out was easy...

33octob2.jpg

the panel was not too complicated to make, also I bought this magnet, which really helps when you want to put two panels together in one level or a certain angle...

33octob3.jpg

in a true oldbus-style this is the finished panel ( I now only make fotos, when I have grinded down the welds and polished the surface).

33octob4.jpg

now my first can of primer is almost empty, still too much parts on the car not primered :P

33octob5.jpg

and I still had the chance to give the cylinder head a good clean. I'll bring this to a friend next week, who will replace the valve steams and adjust the valve clearance. I could do it myself, but I neither have the tools or the shims... it'll be quicker when someone else does it, I also ordered a gasket kit for the engine, so if I am bored or don't want to do any bodywork, I can put the engine back together....

33octob5.jpg

those scratches by the bolt hole between the two cylinders on the left would worry me... just saying !

or are you getting the cylinder head re-faced?

it's time for the weekly update; had to work yesterday, so I wasn't in the mood for working on the car, but today I escaped into the workshop after breakfast....

333oct1.jpg

I ripped out the sound deadening, not a nice job, but as I have to weld there, the stuff must go out....

333oct2.jpg

this is the part under the rear seat, where it meets the inner sill and the rear axle mount.... it is a bit complicated here, as I put one arm from the lift (Hebebühne?) under there, so I have to fix the mount before I can weld there...

333oct3.jpg

so first I cut out the rear axle mount....

333oct4.jpg

good bye....

333oct5.jpg

looks scary, doesn't it ?

333oct6.jpg

bolted the new mount on.... checked the measurements I made and then the welder came in place...

333oct7.jpg

and finished with welding for today.... more next weekend....

but I still wanted to do a bit, so off to the engine :

333oct8.jpg

replaced the crankshaft and idler gaskets (and gave it a good clean with the wire brush...)

333oct9.jpg

same with the mountings for the generator; this will receive some paint, but first the rubber mounts will be replaced, but they look shiney....

333oct10.jpg

and the thing where the oilfilter is mounted.....

IMG_1310.sized.jpg

Tusen takk for pakken Håkon, mye bra her:p
